Pinion opinions..... (long) Posted by vsfoxe [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Pinion opinions, please, aka Arabiflora, Mon, 16 May 2011 16:46:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'll offer some input, maybe an opinion for what it's worth (usually less than $ .02). I bought my '90 SPG in 2002. It had slight pinion whine in 3rd & 4th under slight load. It still has the same slight whine, 30K miles, 9 years later. It IS an SPG, and does occasionally have some Turbo fun. I chose to ignore it until it changes for the worse, but it hasn't changed yet. However, yours just started making the noise, so perhaps yours is "changing for the worse" now? Redline was a good vhoice, changing it is a good choice. I use Honda MTF myself, but I think that's simply a matter of opinion. I suggest that you monitor it carefully, see if it gets worse, or stays how it is. I read that you should attack the problem now - but what if it is ready to go another 30-50K miles on one more Redline change? It is a quandry, and is somewhat dependent on your future intentions, and what you will do if it goes negative. Repair that transmission, or get a good (?) used one to replace it. No answer, perhaps some thinking material? I would keep enjoying the car, and listen carefully once in a while. Good luck. Vern
