Hi. I posted in late April about my '92 900 turbo convertible, automatic, engine running rough in stop-and-go traffic. Thanks to the folks who responded. I tried to follow as much of your advice as I could. As I mentioned, I don't really work on the car myself, I wish I had that knowledge/knack.
So my Saab mechanic thought he solved the problem by replacing a wire to the alternator, which he said was barely connected. Did nothing. Problem persisted. Basically, I could run smoothly on the highway all day, strong and solid, but if I got in a traffic backup, the engine would start missing. I could keep it from stalling out by putting it in neutral and goosing the accelerator.
Yesterday I got stuck in bad traffic in Philly and had to go up the Ben Franklin Bridge, which is steep, to get home. Even goosing accelator, car had no pick up. Turbo was cranking, engine revving, to no avail. Finally just stopped on the bridge. I became one of those guys you see the cop car pushing off the bridge.
Previously, if I let the engine cool down, it would restart and run just fine. Didn't happen this time. Finally had to have it towed to mechanic.
To add extra spice, the Saab guy I use is overwhelmed right now and can't work on the car, so I took it to my other mechanic, a great guy I've used for many years on Hondas and Subarus and such, who is not a Saab guy.
So, I need more advice. The Saab mechanic who looked at it previously did not think a vacuum leak or spark plug wires were problems.
Fuel pump? Some kinda fuel pump relay? Car has just under 180,000 miles, I've had it a year, never failed to start before yesterday's meltdown.
Anybody been through this?
Thanks.
