more hypothetical questions...shops, techs (long).. feel free to chime in. owners as well! (no i am not involved with this at all, just curious).
suppose it's an indy you've used for some time and are generally happy wth up until this point. or even a new indy you just started going to. suppose when the shop owner gets back he says "yes, our fault, we'll make good.."
what does "good" constitute? a "new" used gearbox? a "new" new gearbox? a "new" rebuilt gearbox?
1) suppose everyone agrees that "new" new is not an option because not available. and both parties involved are being reasonable.
2) suppose everyone agrees that a "new" rebuilt gearbox is the answer for peace of mind and security on parts of both parties concerned.
-whose rebuilt gearbox? known names like erikkson? some other large "known" rebuilder? local "expert"? someone of shops choosing?
3) suppose shop wants to install a "used" gearbox, afterall, the owners 'box was used, and it would help shop save money? shop is happy, but owner isn't so sure but agrees anyway because they want car back asap. used gearbox has a 30/60/90 day warranty or no warranty
-if gearbox fails in warranty time, shop pays for another 'box, and does owner pay for the re & re costs for the new 'box? or does shop cover/split costs to maintain some happiness on customer's part?
-if gearbox fails w/ no warranty is shop off hook completely? does owner eat all costs for another 'box and re & re of that one?
-if no warranty 'box fails, and shop not willing to ante up to help defray costs. being as it was "no warranty" and they're "legally" in the right (but not morally), do you ever use that shop again?
4) no one is happy with any option and names are called and threats are issued. it devolves to we know where and and much unhappiness, dollars, and time involved on both parties parts.
another question however, and i have no actual ideas on this. wouldn't the gearbox be making noise, difficult to shift, etc., long before the gearbox actually locked up? isn't 900 miles a long way to go before any indication of issues by locking up?
this makes me wonder if i really need to be much more dilligent about checking gearbox oil level if there are not warning signs of gearbox damage happening due to low or no oil? i did install a dipstick side cover on my 1990 just to make checking easier.
i'm just curious about peoples views on this, from both sides of the fence. luckily i've not had such an major issues, and i honestly would hope for happy result for both shop and owner.
i guess the same sort of situation (same but in reverse) could apply to overfilling or not filling engine crankcase due to draining that oil instead of gearbox oil? along with the same above questions.
thanks for reading this far! let me know!
mark :-)
