Low coolant no start?

My son has an '89 900T. He's been having some driveability issues with it lately. Specifically lack of power. Twice in the past couple weeks he had a no-start condition and called me from where he was stuck. Luckily after talking for a while to diagnose it he tried the car and it started. The first time I thought it might be the hall sensor connection, so we rewired it. Tonight when he got the car home after his recent no-start escapade he said it ran like crap all the way home, like he was running out of gas. When I went to look at the car, his coolant tank was empty. I figured that was effecting the NTC sensor. We filled it up and the car is back to normal--for now. Does that sound like a logical problem? When he went to start the car, it cranked but wouldn't start and he said he could smell gas.
He told me tonight that he has a small leak on the PS and that he's been adding coolant, but has forgot about it for awhile. I think that one of his freeze plugs might be leaking--next project.
