after years of having my indy weld to patch sections as they rusted (and never trusting it to not fall apart somewhere else), I finally bit the bullet last year and installed a brand new exhaust from eeuro myself. Basically, they are so cheap I can put a new cat back exhaust on any time anything fails for about the same price as getting a part fixed locally...
anyway, my point was, I agree, though overtightening might make it hard to adjust if you have second thoughts, it almost doesn't matter long down the road, as it'll rust + will therefore come apart quickly with a dremel +/or sawzall... (also I use muffler cement on the joints so I assume that won't come apart great anyway?)... I did use a stainless bolts wherever possible just in case...
anyway, I am in no way an expert at this! That was evident as I did it... so much frustration + discomfort... and a lot of time readjusting stuff to (mostly) eliminate rattles... was harder because I replaced the cat also and for whatever reason the combination of Bosal cat + starla exhaust was tricky to align so the cat wouldn't rattle against the heat shield + wouldn't leak... eventually got it so the rattle is only in reverse on startup (might have a motor mount that needs changing? fair bit of engine vibration at least on startup)... so not perfect, but still worth doing: a big money saver...
definitely a job where owning a lift makes it much more tolerable!
James...
