I think you implied you pulled pump from tank with the two black fuel lines still attached. I don't mentally see that it is possible to do so. The two lines as I remeber them had a single screw holding a plastic hold down clamp. Onced removed the white valves at the end of the black fuel lines could be pulled up with vise grips if snugly but not tightly gripped. It sounds as if you already have removed the large black segmented hold down ring trhat holds pump body in place and now the cannister won't go back into top of tank. I have taken that ring loos without the proper removal tool before, but the last time it was such a pain I purchased the tool for the next pump. There are brainier folks on the net , I think they will join in soon.
