Re: Inner driver, housing/carrier swap, shims? Posted by Cmyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Inner driver, housing/carrier swap, shims?, Jeff Cullen, Thu, 7 Jul 2011 13:10:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Your assumption is correct, use the shim pack that is with the receiving unit. "Technically" you should replace only the inner driver itself and maintain the shims and housing (the round aluminum housing that the inner driver is installed in before being bolted to the unit) that are with the receiving unit if you want to be really sure that the ring gear backlash and side bearing preload are maintained properly BUT there seems to be very little if any dimensional difference between one housing and another and you will probably be fine. Of course it's always a good idea to replace the axle seal and o'ring and you must remove the innerd river from it's housing to do the seal and that's your chance to swap housings and maintain the originals. I never do that job without replacing the seal and o'ring. Don't forget to put thread sealant (not loctite) on the bolts or you'll have a leak and be sure that the snap ring isn't pinched before you try to spread it or it will get bent and require replacement.
