The switch triggers the relay - the relay actually doing the switching.
Pull the relay and look at the condition of the contacts, both male and female. These seem to heat up and over time the contacts lose their tension, resulting in loss of contact and corrosion.
You can pull the panel up - release the females by pushing the 'prong' with a small probe - when loose you can pinch them to restore tension in contact and then reinstall. If the plastic has melted so you can't reinstall I have drilled out the melted spot so I can put a new female on the wire and pass it thru the hole and plug to the relay.
This will probably be the case if you have run higher than stock headlight bulbs.
