Jeff,
all automotive gearboxes (except for newly designed DSG and such) have the following design:
- an input shaft that takes the torque from engine thru the clutch
- an output shaft that is constantly in contact with the wheels thru the final drive unit
- an intermediate shaft (countershaft, layshaft) can be considered an option; if it's there then it's constantly connected to the input shaft. C900 gearboxes utilize this part.
- there're two types of gears on the output shaft: ones are in constant engagement with ones on the input/counter-shaft, all they go spinning should the input/countershaft be running; the others are locked onto the output shaft
- if you go into a gear then you just lock an appropriate gear-set on the output shaft onto this shaft by means of hubs that encompass the gears
This means that the input shaft is staying stationary if engine is stopped or clutch is disengaged. The output shaft is running if the wheels are spinning (or vice versa: wheels are running if the output shaft is rotating).
Having said that above I read your symptoms - noise with the clutch engaged, car moving fwd with the stick in N position, gearbox control (that very stick in cabin) being very tight - the following:
- gears on the output shaft are partially locked onto the shaft
This can be caused by:
- worn/damaged linkage in the gearbox controls (the stick is in N position, but the synchro forks are trying to lock the hubs onto the gears on the output shaft)
- worn/damaged output shaft assembly
- gearbox went finally kaput and was divided by zero; usually it happens due to overload or lack of lubrication
I checked the stick movements in your video and don't think that #2 is your case. So, I am sorry, you have to go inside. If you decide not to fix that gearbox you still should be able to get some payback selling the parts that still can be re-used (e.g. inner drivers; or even the final drive if it's in good shape - if you decided to part them out I'm #1 in the raw should you be ok with intl shipping).
Good luck,
Zig
