Bear in mind that we live at 4200+ ft. That's the Great Salt Lake level and it's all uphill from there.
In addition to the rarefied air and the octane limitation (91 premium), those of us living along the Wasatch Front deal with a much higher proportion of vertical travel in our daily travels. It is common to climb over a thousand feet just driving around town, and driving to Park City takes you over Parley's Summit at 7000 ft. To say nothing of the ski resorts like Brighton or Alta at over 8500 ft.
Try to find that in Kansas.
