Since it wasn't mentioned before, the first thing to do is to SAVE the drained oil and carefully inspect it. Strain the oil and look for pieces. The more you find, the worse the inside can be. There could be a bronze tint to the oil which would be the wear of the parts inside. Check the magnetic drain plug ( if it has one ) for "hair" and if there isn't a drain plug, then look at the screen in the rear cover, and analyze the pieces, parts and debris that may have been trapped in there.
We can pull out certain pieces and conclude they are reverse slider parts or other specific parts of the unit. Consider this like a blood panel and you are checking for anything that doesn't appear to be just normal fluid.
After all that, then see what you can find via the side covers.....open the front cover and see if the chains are intact.
Mile High Body took a transmission supplied by a defunct outfit in Kentucky, and put a torque wrench on the input shaft and determined it took way too much force to move the innards. They rejected the gearbox based on high torque. It was suspect that they couldn't move it by hand!!!
