Hey All,

I thought I'd introduce myself since I just picked up a 1996 Turbo. I bought it site unseen off of ebay. Sadly I should know better, but I've made the mistake yet again—This car has some major issues. BTW, it has 150k on the clock. Guy said the turbo was replaced, gearbox rebuilt, and the clutch replaced in the last 50k.

So I could use your help as I sort through the numerous issues. The car had been sitting for a while (the seller said, "it ran perfect when I parked it").

So after installing a new battery, it fired right up. However:
1. There's a pronounced tick from the engine. Sounds to me like a lazy lifter (my Miata has a similar song), but when I revved the engine, the noise didn't abate. The oil level is fine. Is this normal?

2. As I was removing the ductwork to replace the slave cylinder (I knew about this). I noticed that oil had pooled in the pipe that joins the airbox to the turbo. There's oil residue at the junction of what I think is the crankcase vent and that airbox-to-turbo pipe. So my pessimistic side says the rings are worn or the cylinder walls are scored and this thing is pressurizing the hell out of the pump. Or maybe, but some grace of god, there's just a PCV issue that's maybe not easy, but inexpensive to fix. Any thoughts?

3. My Bentley manual is on its way. In the meantime, is the replacing the slave cylinder a major PITA? Better to remove the cooling fans first? Any other tips?

4. The valve cover is leaking. Looks like at the rt front corner. Is there a good source for a high-quality gasket? This is serious enough that it has to be fixed.

Thanks so much,
Larry Webster

PS: There's also fluid/oil all over the steering rack.
