Fourth gear? Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Sat, 3 Sep 2011 10:43:29 In Reply to: Auto Tranny Noise, Ric, Sat, 3 Sep 2011 08:46:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Ric,
If it upshifts to fourth gear then you are on the wrong board. The C900 never ever came with a four speed automatic transaxle. The BW T37 (the unit that was used in C900s) was strictly a three speed transaxle. I know that if you look for parts some of the transmission parts suppliers make reference to the 900 four speed for C900 model years but it's a mistake on their part. Anywho......That whine almost has to be a Torrington thrust bearing or a problem with the planetary assembly. These units have bunches of needle type thrust bearings which eventually give up. A little clue is that the noise goes away in third gear. In third gear both drum clutches are applied with the effect that the planetary assembly locks up and transmits torque I/O=1:1. Sorry for the bad news (assuming that I'm right anyway) but that's not anything that can be fixed without a complete overhaul. Damage to the planetary assembly most often results from a maladjusted shift control cable. That's about the only thing that hurts the
planetaries before other things (pump, front clutch, rear clutch, etc.) wear out from high mileage. How many miles are on the unit? If the unit has high mileage and maybe has been previously rebuilt then thrust bearings are suspect as some rebuilders don't check or replace those. The Governor is not a likely source of the noise. It's basically a block with a valve in it and there's nothing about it that can "whine" and anyway, it sounds like the car shift OK (so the governor is working). Good luck.
