Yes the left and right axles are different lengths. You'd do best to use the axle shafts that are in the car now or lay them side by side of the ones you'll be installing to be sure that they match. When I say "axle shaft" I mean the steel rod that's between the tripod bearing and outer CV. The proper way to fit those later inner drivers is to remove them from their round aluminum housings and install them in the round aluminum housings that are currently on the 84 transmission before fiting them to the main case. Technically, you can't count on different housings to be precisely the same but in reality they probably are. The shims, which are comprised of a "stack" of thin shims, must stay where they originate relative to the main transaxle case. I usually grab them as the inner driver assembly is extracted from the main case and pin them to the case with one of the bolts so there's no chance of them wandering while I deal with the inner driver assembly. The left and right housings are different as well, the left one has the speedo adapter. The shims and round housings are not symetrical, that is to say that the bolt holes are not all equidistant, so keep that in mind and they tend to snag in the o'ring groove of the round aluminum housing as you insert it and tighten the bolts so watch for that too. Some shims from a stack may stick to the round aluminum housing or the main case and and can drop away later when you aren't looking. Put thread sealant (not thread locker) on all 12 bolts or you'll have a leak. Replace the o'ring and if you pull the axles out of their round aluminum housings replace the oil seals too and check the ball bearing. All those parts are available from site sponsors and not too much $$$.
