The little opening in the flywheel cover is directly on top of the cover. It's kind of hidden by the hose from the AIC valve. Best viewed from the driver's side. I usually take a thin white or silver sharpie and pot a dot in the little timing groove in the cover and a dot at 16 degrees. It makes it much easier to see the marks. You can turn the flywheel with a big screw driver by putting the end of the screwdriver in the flywheel teeth and prying it against the opening in the flywheel cover. Just keep turning until you see the degree marks on the flywheel so that you can mark it with the sharpie. If you can't reach in there with a sharpie, a little dot of white-out applied with end of a sharp stick will do.
Don't forget to undo the vacuum line on the vacuum canister on the distributor and plug the hose. I usually just stick it on the coolant bleeder nipple on the thermostat housing. Then don't forget to reconnect it afterward.
