heater fan motor

The heater fan does not work on my 1989 900 winter car. The fuse slot is melted. Can I access the fan motor from the pass side speaker hole? If so, I would like to wire my own circut such that the fan will blow in the high position only. Has anyone attempted this, and if so, would you please send any pertinent info. If there is a common issue that is known to cause inoperative fan, please send this as well. Thanks.
