Here's a thought.....the tapping is certainly the lifters crying for oil but the oil pressure gauge sending device is lower in the system so your problem goes beyond just a top end condition, you actually have low oil pressure. Put another way; The symptom is the tapping up topside but the problem is lower down, at the pump or pressure control valve or somewhere. It's not unusual to have that valve get jammed up and drop the pressure to about 5 PSI which will turn on the light and make the lifters tap. Usually there is just a small particle of debris in the valve and simply removing the valve and screwing it back in will free it up (although it's a good idea to actually clean it). The bad news is that the valve is very hard to remove due to it's location so go into the job aware of that. If the car wasn't driven too fast, long or hard while the light was on then it's probably not hurt and there's really no reason at all to lift the valve cover, i.e. once the pressure problem is corrected the lifers will be fine and quiet.
