Do a search here under fuel sender (or sending unit). What you are going to want to do is find your way to the fuel sending unit in the gas tank. unplug the large lead to the sending unit (has three wires leading to it). The light on your dash should go out - if it doesn't you've got a problem in the speedo unit or the wiring in between (this would be exceptionally rare!).
IIRC, the center lead on the plug is ground. Depending on how you happen to be holding it, shorting the two on one side will cause either your reserve light to come on, or will peg the needle gauge to full. Then do the same thing on the other side. If one or both of those things happens it means it is your sending unit is the culprit. If one or both doesn't work, then it is likely your wiring to the speeedo. If you have other weirdness in your speedo as well (e.g. strange behavior of your tach or blinkers), it is likely the foil wiring on the back of the speedometer.
