Alright, you got me on SAAB experience. I have been wrenching since my VW Bug in 1977 so I might have total "area under the curve" if you follow.
I bought this TC because the GF (now fiancee) wanted it, inspite of the autobox. I know they are common failures, and I've already threatened to convert it to 5speed. My son's 89 with a fairly fresh rebuild I did back in 2005 has less than 20K miles on it and the car is dead, so I'll be towing that shell to Atlanta and pulling the 87 motor and complete 5 speed conversion for the eventual conversion.
Believe it or not you might be spot on. New started about 2 months ago. Last night when trying to hit the starter I heard some evil noises coming from the starter motor (localized to the "buzzing sounds" and some no good smell). It may just be my new lifetime NAPA starter is dead, just out of the box. Took a look at the front mount and it is different in type compared to the 5 speed; looks cylindrical but on it's side (horizontal bolt). I"ll see if the I can get it started again and if the mount may have failed and be banging UP and DOWN when the torque reaction hits it for forward and reverse.
Thanks, I"ll keep you updated findings. Wanted to drive the TC on the Blue Ridge Parkway for leaf viewing Oct. 22 weekend, but doubt that is gonna happen now.....
