A little trick for when you replace the master Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 08:11:33 In Reply to: sounds like a textbook master failure. nm, Simon S, Sun, 16 Oct 2011 17:37:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I just replaced my clutch line, and the access around the ABS master cylinder is pretty tight. You can get enough room to maneuver by loosening the adjustment bolts on the alternator and pushing it as far towards the AC compressor as possible. Then unbolt the coolant expansion tank and flip it up over the manifold and zip tie it in place (you might need to unplug the large forward ABS electrical connector to get the clearance needed to wiggle it out of there).
This will give you enough room to reach in with your left hand to where the bolt is so that you can use an open end wrench on the line's bolt. You will also need to lean over and use your right hand in the operation, since you will have to transfer the wrench between hands repeatedly during the process.
Since dropping the wrench is fairly inevitable in this operation, I use the "dope on a rope" technique (the dope would be the one holding the wrench). Tie a 3-foot long piece of nylon cord to the closed box end of a combination wrench and tie the other end to your belt loop (leave plenty of slack). That way when the inevitable happens, you can retrieve the wrench with your right hand without having to get up, or pull your left arm out of position.
It makes things a whole less frustrating (only took about 5 minutes to undo/do the bolt at the master cylinder, not counting the mucking with the alternator/expansion tank).
