Early this year I finished a restoration of my wife's '82 base three door that she bought new. Due to engine problems (after 278,000 miles) the car was parked in a Cover-it fabric garage in a rural area of Southern Maryland and sat there for the better part of ten years.
We were spared the mouse problem thanks to a large black snake that moved in early on. He mostly lived in the engine room (we met a few times over the years) but made regular patrols throughout the rest of the car, keeping the car rodent-free and leaving long calling cards here and there.
However, even with no mouse nests to contend with, I still had to completely disassemble the dash and scrub all components (including soaking and pressure-washing the A/C evaporator coil) to get the smell to subside. Shampooing the rugs and the seats was required, too. Oh, replace the headliner as well.
BTW, the finished product can be viewed on http://www.vernparker.com and scroll to '82 Saab
