1991 emergency brake issues

I recently replaced the rear pads on my 1991 900s. The right rear caliper piston would not retract when I turned the e-brake screw. I replaced the caliper. The drivers caliper retracted. Then I turned the drivers screw in till it stopped and backed it out a bit. In order to get the cable to hook up again on the drivers side, I had to adjust the cable housing under the back seat. The brake would engage with minimal travel on the handle and I checked to see that it wasn't hanging up and dragging the pads and it was good. Several days later, I pulled the handle, felt a pop and the handle comes up much farther before engaging. The cable isn't broken and if I jack the car up, I can't spin the wheels when the handle is up and they spin freely with the handle down. What happened? Is it possible the ratcheting mechanism inside one of the calipers is screwed up?
