This is a new one for me. I'm working on my recent 1990T. Key turns a little sticky in the ignition. No problem. The seats and carpet are already out for cleaning. Pop out the ignition console. When I remove the white plastic thing off the bottom of the console a piece of the reverse lock falls out. I look in the white piece and see someone put about half a cup of grease in it. The grease has separated with thick oil on the top. Clean the lock cylinder. Remove the rest of the reverse lock parts. Go to reassemble and notice the rubber centering ring is so swollen from being soaked in the oily grease it won't fit between the top and bottom pieces of the console. Then I notice it's not only swollen but it was installed cockeyed and the inside nylon piece is broken. Have to spend a couple hours under the car removing the tapered pin, replacing the whole shift rod and realigning the shifter. Moral: take it easy on the amount of grease in the plastic console thingy.
