So can I just cut the AC Compressor Belt?

92 900 S CVT. AC used to work, sort of, but hasn't worked in
a couple of years, and I think the compressor is starting to squeal.
I don't want to remove it, although fixing the AC is pretty far down
the list of things that matter to me right now. Can I just
cut the belt and pull it (the belt) out? In the event that I want to
get the AC working again, would it be a big job to replace
the belt?
OT: Passed inspection with flying colors (173K). None of
the emission levels were even close to the limits. One less
thing to worry about for the next two years.
