Gentlemen,
I tried searching this BB (as well as other sources) for axial and radial shaft play tolerance specifications for Mitsu turbocharges - and failed. Can anybody mastered on this question please advise on the check'n'set values?
Just to be on the same page, I take the axial play to be the play measured when you apply the alternating force on the shaft towards to the turbine wheel and then backwards to the compressor wheel. And the radial play is the one which happens when the force is applied up and down (e.g. 12 and 6 o'clock) onto the compressor or turbine wheel.

Upon my last check I carried out half an year ago, I measured zero axial play and kinda 0.15-0.2mm (I'm relying upon my muscle memory from those days I did valve clearance checks on engines w/o hydraulic lifters; the stated values go into... 2.54... 0.006-0.0078 imperial) of radial play. Yesterday I did crankcase pressure test which ended up with 0.8 bar absolute (0.2 bar vacuum) at idling and 1.15 bar absolute (0.15 bar of boost) at full boost - and did compression checks which ended... badly (8.6-8.9 for #1 and #4 and 6.6-5.4 for #2 and #3 cylinders; that goes for 103 and 89 in your imperial pounds and inches squared). The mechanic who borrowed me compression gauge noticed the oil pattern on the turbo unit and - although agreed with me that it may be the oil from the crankcase ventilation that goes into the turbo mixed with the fresh air - advised to go inside the turbo charger and service it with at least changing the gaskets and seals which seal compressor housing and CHRA. So with the question above about the permissible shaft play I wonder about the budget I should consider before starting all that stuff. And on a side-note I have to mention that we lack those turbo-shops with proper turbo balancing equipment so even with $400 reserved for turbo overhaul it still will be a challenge to find a shop giving me a proper guarantee on the turbo balance they carry out.

TIA,
Zig
