Long-term follow-up in case anyone else has this problem:
*Finally* got the time/parts together to replace axles, balljoints, shocks, tie-rod ends: Scrutinized both stripped-down steering knuckles with squares and gauges and whatnot, couldn't find any significant asymmetry between them (whew!) but LO AND BEHOLD the lower passenger balljoint (that took the sliding hit to the snowy curb) was missing some sort of internal metal liner/bearing/bushing entirely, just rattling around allowing better than a half-inch of inboard-outboard play.
Now with 4 new balljoints the car tracks better with the steering centered than it has in years, and that's just with my DIY string alignment job! I'll see how it wears one more pair of used tires before I spring for virgin rubber all around.
SO RELIEVED. So much happier to drive now....
