I don't think you need the gear set. If your gear set is jammed, and you put any kind of force on it, the gear tabs that fit in the base of the ignition cylinder would certainly snap off. They are pretty fragile. If you can't turn the key, then either your key is worn to the point that it won't engage the tumblers properly, or your cylinder is frozen up good (have you tried hot water?). I'd get a new key cut from your VIN (assuming that your ignition tumbler has never been replaced in the past) and try that first. If the ignition still won't turn, your next step would be to get a new ignition cylinder and key set. That replacement procedure is in the Bentley. You will need to make a small tool from a coat hanger to depress the pin that locks the cylinder in the housing.
