Limp home mode manages the injectors using a map rather than sensor inputs. My first guess is that you have an ignition, injection or other problem which is compounded when in limp home mode and reduces efficiency below the level necessary to keep the engine running. For instance: Your ignition timing is way off but not so much that the car won't run (maybe poorly). Once in L.H. mode it can't run at all. Plug the AMM back in and do a complete tuneup, could just be really nasty spark plugs or cap and rotor or something.
