Steve,
Re-gasket your engine, check and replace any CV boots that are split, Look at the harmonic balancer and replace it if the rubber is weak, Check the motor mounts the driver's side is especially difficult to do with the engine in place, steering rack is easiest with the engine out, power steering pump and hoses too, water pump, timing chain, oil pump, clutch especially slave cylinder. Re-gasket the replacement transmission too and replace the inner drivers if they are worn out. That's all stuff that's easiest to do with the power unit out so inspect all those things and deal with them if they are weak, you'll be glad you did.
Check the third digit of the transmission series numbers on the tags (GMXXXXX). That digit will either be a 6 or a 7 and describes the primary chain sprocket ratio (if it's an 8 you have solid gold, call me!) and ideally you'd like them to be the same. Seven is the higher gear ratio. You can swap the sprockets if you really want the ratios to remain as they were.
Don't throw the old unit away, we always need cores to rebuild or as organ donors, they aren't making anymore of them. Good luck!
