Before deciding that the radio is the problem, you should test the cable that links the radio to the antenna. On other old cars I have found that moisture gets inside and corrodes away the tiny wire down the middle.
A stereo shop probably will have these, in long-enough length to replace yours. An easy test would be to pull radio enough to get at the antenna in back, and pull side panel in trunk to get at the antenna there, then run a temporary test with a new cable, outside of car between the two.
If it fixes it then you need to figure out a route to run the replacement.
Or problem could be with the antenna itself. Any test of this needs to ground the replacement antenna.
