Malfunctioning AIC?

'94 900 Turbo Conv. Comm. Ed., 145,000 miles.
The car starts without issue (btw Optima batteries are worth every penny) and then idles fine for the first 1-5 minutes. After driving about 2 miles and then at a stoplight while idling, the check engine light comes on for about 30 seconds and then goes away. I notice the tachometer will either idle a bit high at 1000 RPM or vary between 700-1000 rpm while idling during this time. There is a bit of a clanking sound that sounds like valve lifters, which I am used to with C900s, especially in cold weather right after starting up (the weather today was dry and about 60 deg.). After driving for about 20 minutes, the engine seems completely warmed-up, and the varying (or high) idling goes away and the the faint clanking sound disappears. Could this be a failing AIC? This is the second time in a week that I've seen the check engine light come on for a short period of time while idling, about 5 minutes after starting the car. Btw, the check engine light illuminated just once (in both instances) and the car had no further issues for another 8 miles/30 minutes of city driving. Either way, it's headed to the mechanic on Monday.
