Correct, you have to put a gauge on in place of the pressure switch.
The switch is 7psi - way way below safe pressure.
Lifters don't require head removal, only cam removal. You can tell for sure by just pulling the valve cover, and trying to depress each lifter - if any of them are squishy, they are toast.
