Pretty much any one can be made to fit, though the "survivors" out there are quite likely to be a direct bolt in. Yes, the front case changed a few times. Once for the front motor mount, and at least once for internal changes (you have to watch out for that one, IIRC).
Even if you get a gearbox with a rubber front mount, that can be made to work in your car. Since the front mount on the autobox never changed, there is a simple bracket adapter (a Saab part) to make it work in the later cars that usually have the hydraulic front motor mounts.
Side mounts are a non-issue, since they are all on the motor side, except for maybe one or two bolts. Same with the linkage. A car as late as yours came with an internal-centering (springs that try to return the shifter to the 2-4 gate) shifter. Earlier cars (Pre-16v, IIRC) had centering applied on the shifter at the front of the housing.
Your only real problems will be if you end up with a pre-16V gearbox (1985 or earlier), where you may need to change the inner drivers to suit your driveshafts (and the motor torque). Look for a 1986 or later gearbox, preferrably from a turbo, and you'll be just fine.
Lastly, if you do end up with a non-turbo box, the ONLY differences to a turbo box of the same year will be in the primary transmission chain at the front. THe sprockets will be different. You may like the new "overdrive" on your turbo, or not, but that's a relatively easy swap.
