Many of us probably would love to own a new 88 Edwardian Grey SPG; with a buffalo grey interior, but few of us had that opportunity. Mr. Kellum saw the beauty of its sleek lines; and likely saw it as the Thouroughbred it was. He bought it on June 17, 1988 from Matheny Imports, INC in Jacksonville, Fla.
Crawling around the trunk area after entering through the back seat I slowly worked through the process of loosening the lock plate and finally got some cool air as I pushed up the hatch. I'd bought the 88 from a guy in Pigeon Forge Tennessee about a year ago. I had replaced the dizzy with good results and the reworked engine easily boosted into the red. The dry rotted tires had recently been replaced and a gentle run up interstate 75 quickly told me that the tires had been the only cause of a bouncy rough ride. Had made two runs between the Richmond exits when traffic was scarce. The first was 105. The second about 2 weeks later 115, still had more left, but I thought about what getting caught would do to my CDL and calling myself a immature A-hole, backed out of it. I vowed not to give into the kid side of my 66 yo brain again. After removing the hatch interior panel I quickly adjusted and fixed the mechanism. I saw the SAAB owners manual holder laying in the trunk, but picked it up then ignored it as I had for the year since I owned the car. Too much to do, always too busy. The radio also had not worked since I bought the car. I finally had some time for leisure so I popped out the radio and looked for the code on the top that often is written by dealers or owners. It wasn't there. So back to the owners manual I went, found the code. The radio was no good. Got another spare stock radio, put it in, and then I was done. Except the manual holder kept nagging at me. Inside the leather folder I found the original air gage and three manuals. Inside one I found the original window sticker. $26,423 was what the 88 cost Mr. Kellum. What a man I thought. Inside the cover next to the name and street address was the 22 year old phone number. I thought wouldn't it be great to see if he still lived there at that location with the same number. Not likely.
A older sounding man answered. I said "I'm trying to locate a Mr. Kellum". The voice responded, "Mr. Kellum died a long time ago". I said I was very sorry to hear that and made a very brief attempt to inquire further. I sensed the tiredness in the distant voice, and said thank you and good bye. It was if I had known Mr. Kellum all my life. It hurt to know he was gone;and to face so unexpectedly the truth my own passing, when ever that would come. So thank you Mr. Kellum, the spirit of Saab lives on with your purchase so long ago. Those here on TSN feel your joy as you bought and drove your new 88 SPG.We feel it each time we sit in OUR 900. I for one salute you and the spirit that is Saab.
