replacing brake line segment continued continued... Posted by CBS [Email] ![]() ![]() |
If any of you have followed a previous post, my attempt to repair the line included: cutting out 12" of rusted/failed brake line, flaring the two ends, using a store-bought segment of 3/16" line, and using 2 unions and flare nuts to repair the line. One of the flares/unions failed. Today I recut the leaking line and reflared the end. Some thing...drip drip drip. With nothing really to lose, I unfastened the nuts and rethreaded making sure nothing was cross-threading the brass union. Drip drip drip. So with nothing to lose I torqued the nuts into the union...probably 40-50 pounds torque. Presto, no leaks. I have a clean container under the union so I will further pressure test.
Question. The reservoir drained completely of brake fluid over the several days I was unable to get back to the job. I topped it up and without bleeding I have a solid pedal. How could this be when there has to be air in the system (at least from the point of the leak back to the right rear caliper)?
