Harbor Freight vacuum pump Posted by JerseySaab [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: amateur a/c equipment, PaulS ![]() |
A lot of us are doing our own A/C work since it's outrageously expensive to have a shop do it, and for older vehicles the cost of servicing the A/C can equal or even exceed the value of the car. Doing your own work also makes it possible to use alternative refrigerants such as Enviro-Safe.
You can make a vacuum pump out of an old air conditioner or refrigerator compressor. For years I used one that I made from the compressor out of a trash-picked air conditioner. Then I inherited an air conditioning service cart from a friend who passed away (he was an auto A/C service tech for over 40 years). That has a vacuum pump underneath made from an old water fountain compressor.
I also have a Harbor Freight pump so as to have something more portable and it works well, though I got mine a few years ago and it was more like $80:

HF also carries a two-stage pump for $50 more, but the single-stage job pulls down to 30" of vacuum with no problem.
