I doubt that anyone knows the definitive answer to that question as far as: "I've run without the pin and ........." so we have to craft an answer based on what we do know and, long story short, I believe that you should definitely replace the pin. I suspect that those bolts came loose due to not being loctited on assembly. They have to be thread locked (loctite) and torqued. I use medium strength (blue) loctite on them and I've never had a problem. I would say that the pin and the bolts work in tandem, each providing a particular property, to prevent the flywheel from "micro-shifting" under high load. That slight shifting would be a compounding problem, the more it shifts the looser it gets and the looser it gets the more it shifts, so I think that not having the pin would be playing with fire.
I don't have one to measure at the moment but I recall that it's a standard size. Any machine shop or good auto parts place should be able to sell you one. It's probably 10 mm diameter and maybe 15 mm long (just an educated guess).
