or the voltage regulator brushes have worn down well below their service limit. The battery power usage has exceeded the charge in the battery. There's probably just enough charge to operate minor loads.
Same sort of thing happened to me on a rainy day about 150 miles from home. Replaced the voltage regulator and all was fine ... after a jump to get it started.
How many miles on the vehicle?
