stu,
pls check the picture below. Does your car look like the one in the middle or it looks like the one at the bottom? For the latter you'd better go to neighbors on 900NG/9-3OG board. This BB is for C900 shown in the middle of that picture.
For all C900's all the speedometers are of mechanical (cable) type. Yep, there are wires coming OUT of speedometer (to the injection ECU or to Cruise Control unit; or to both of them), but the speedometer is driven mechanically via cable from the gearbox. Unless the previous owner replaced stock clocks (dials, instrument cluster) with something else.

So, if you've got a C900 and it hadn't suffered from any impact recently, then I'd say you might have a rat in your cabin: the speedo cable, the speaker wires and the wires going from the fuel relay - the all go behind the dash. I almost said that it could be some bad ground connection there, but audio and injection systems do not share any common ground locations.

Search this BB or check twinsaabs website for knee bolster removal procedure (it's not complex at all, really) and having the knee bolster off check - i.e. carefully inspect - the wires behind the dash. Dash removal (and further installation) is much more complex then knee bolster. And fwiw, start with new good fuse for the fuel pump as mentioned earlier.

Good luck,
Zig

P.S.
And before that - check the voltage across battery terminals and in the cigarette lighter (+ inside, in the center; - on the outer shell). I suspect that your new alternator (better say: VR - voltage regulator - which it came with) might be giving you more then 14.2 +-2 Volts. If you measure more then 14.6V - replace the VR. This procedure is widely covered either here or in your favourite repair manual.
