If the chains must be replaced along with the sprockets, then my sprockets will be no good either, even to copy. Right? If we come to the conclusion that I can't run my current set of sprockets, but can still get them copied, I'm up for mailing them to an engineer to get some CAD files made. I know a couple of local machinists who may be able to run off a set.
I was always under the impression that, since the sprockets were so hard, their wear was effectively nil compared to that of the chain. But I guess I am wrong about this. My chains show evidence of having been run without oil and overheating (caked carbon deposits), which is what I think killed them (and the donor gearbox from which I got them). The sprockets, however, seem like new. I wish there were a way to quantitatively measure effective sprocket wear... I know you can take a length of new chain and lay it over some teeth and see how much play it has, but this doesn't seem very precise.
