Can you get someone else to crank the car while you, under hood, wiggle and fiddle with the hall sensor plug and wiring to the distributor?

This is a known trouble point, and you do mention that it is loose, and you also mention that after fiddling with it a bit the car ran all right for a bit.

Those things kind of point in that direction.

If, while wiggling, car starts or tries to start, and if continuing wiggling makes it act up, that would seem to me to say that wiring, or the jack, needs attention.

Some people have firmed these up to run using zip ties or silicone sealer or other kludges.

Take a close look there anyways.
