It's been one year since I purchased my 88 3dr. She has had the rust, interior, major engine service 180k, brakes and rotors, many engine parts, repaint of all the SPG body kit pieces, bumpers and too many other things to remember replaced.
This week I had to ship 350lbs of furniture back to the manufacturer. The shipping cost came to 550 dollars. The destination was only 400 miles away in Va so I told my wife, "That I'd just throw it in the back of the Saab and drive it back myself." I was told it would not fit. I wagered that it would and we made our standard bet.
That night at 03:00 hrs I rolled out for a 800 mile round trip. Front seat tilted forward and cargo filling all that was left I hit the road in a driving rain storm.
The very first job that was done on the car was new struts all the way around. The original Sachs were still working but seemed harsh. The kit came with new bushings upper and lower. The first ride after their replacement felt worse than the old ones. Harsh pounding in the city and me swerving to avoid every pot hole and expansion joint. It was a little disheartening and made me question why Saab had fit these in the first place. As time passed the ride seemed to get better or was I just getting used to it?
Last night at 70 to 90 mph in that driving rain I realized Saab's genius in fitting that suspension. The load was perfectly controlled. The faster I went the better the car handled. The thin 15 inch tires cut through the flooded highway never once hydroplaning. The car worked brilliantly. I was able to do 800 miles it less than 14 hours with no issues or worries.
While filling up for the return trip a man filling his new super Hyundai walked over and told me his Saab story. He reminisced about how he enjoyed his for years and that only after being totaled did he switch brands. He was not convinced they were the same after GM bought them out. He looked inside, strolled around commenting on the twin pipes and how amazing it still looked. He said bye and continued down the road with his wife at the wheel. Twenty minutes latter I caught them and blew past. I looked in the rear view and saw him waving with his hand to get his wife to go. She just kept shaking her head, he gave up and leaned back in his seat, me smiling at the thought of the bet my wife would have to pay off tonight.
So yes a 24 year old car can be turned into a great daily driver. A 24 year old Saab can be trusted. Replace parts with OEM if you can and remember you almost aways get what you pay for. I paid for piece of mind and that is exactly what my 88 3dr is giving me. Best to all. Drive hard and safe.
