During the ride home from work the other day, I listened to a program on being happy. There was a PHD pysychologist who determined that nationwide, more people reach depression at a younger age than ever and than almost any other country- and in the prime of their lives. He determined that cars and the layout of our communities have a lot to do with this. Every day most people get up early and isolate themselves on the way to work. Often 1-1.5 hour commutes will cause the most depression. It is stressful right from the beginning, and we were not made to operate this way. As I listened to this I just thought about how much I enjoy my commute every morning because I drive a c900. In fact, I've been getting up around 5am every morning now just to start my day working on the Saab. It may sound terrible, but I really enjoy it. I just installed a very old-school center console with VDO gauges in my 1980 turbo. All original and all working! Also put in an original early '80's Saab Sport and Rally steering wheel and refurbed the dash. So satisfying to sit in the now fully redone interior and just smile. Then I get to drive it to work and it's enjoyable.
Moral of the story - it's a practical, affordable hobby that SAVES money in the long run (as opposed to the Nissan Xterra that my wife just bought and is already set to sell because it is such a money hole) and helps us avoid depression. A hat tip to the c900!
