Modern automatic transaxle in a C900 Posted by Cmyles [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Auto Transmission Fabrication question...., BAAB ![]() ![]() |
Baab,
All Saabs built after the C900 (including all 9000s) have tranverse engine layout so that idea is essentially a non-starter. Do you know of a modern front wheel drive, overdrive automatic transaxle that bolts to the bottom of an in-line engine, where the oil pan would normally be? Of course you can install an oil pan on the bottom of a B202 C900 engine (they put them on the 9000) and these days with CNC and water jet it's possible to make almost any kind of a "bell housing" type adapter plate but with your new transaxle projecting off the end of the engine you'll either have to lengthen the engine compartment by about two feet or spin the engine sideways which is how the NG Saabs and virtually all FWD cars are made these days (transverse engine). Believe me, me and many other guys have put lots of thought into adapting some other automatic transmission to the C900 but the "in-line engine on top" FWD configuration presents a gigantic impediment there. Redesigning the power train layout and modifying the chassis could (and probably HAS somewhere) allow for the installation of a modern automatic transaxle but at that point you might as well just get an old 9000 turbo with a ZF4HP18 automatic and enjoy it. It's the last of the real "Swedish" Saabs (in my opinion) and the first to have a transverse engine and sidewinder transaxle (except for the two stroke powered 92). I rebuilt tons of those ZF transaxles and drove 9000s that had them quite a bit and I think they are just fine (although I am a die hard C900 guy). After a great deal of brainstorming I've concluded that the most practical way to have a modern automatic transaxle in a C900 would be to adapt the guts of such a unit into the C900/BWT37 case but with the extremely limited interest in automatic transaxles among C900 enthusiasts (we like to stomp the clutch and throw the shift lever) it wouldn't likely be a profitable (or even break-even) endeavor.
