I had the same problem in my '90 SPG. I just bought a used windshield from the junkyard for $35 and had a windshield place put it in. Fixed the leak. Then I had to cut out and replace the passenger floor because the leak over time had turned the under-carpet to acidic mush and ate right through.

Since then I have replaced a few windshields myself. It is not necessary to pull the dash unless you really want to. You can get a windshield replacement tool for cheap at Harbor Freight. That would have helped a lot. Also if you are using rubber or silicone windshield sealant, use gloves!!! It never comes off. Not sure about the rusted clips. I'm pretty sure they do not hold the windshield, but I've never heard that theory. There were very few things that I have found that were put in at the factory just to help the factory workers that did not have a safety purpose. I would keep them in if possible or try to pull a good set from a junk yard.
