any failure in the screen will allow debris into either pump causing issues. The aftermarket pickup screens on certain sites aren't a great replacement for the OEM pickup screen which actually screws on. I use very thin fabric to re-glue and re-use on my '86.
When you pull the pump to get to the pre-pump, just remember the canister the pump sits in is full of fuel and will empty out when you un-mount the prepump from it.
