It doesn't take pads very long to bed to the rotors and develop grooves to match the ridges. In my earliest days when I had run the pads down to steel-on-iron stage and scored the rotors bad, I just used to throw a cheap set of new pads on. Surprising how well that works. Pull wheels later that day and the rotors would be all smoothed out, with just a few ridges, and brakes worked fine and rarely if ever, from ridges alone, would you feel anything in the pedal.
If I got or get a warped rotor, on the other hand, I just throw it out and buy a new one. Turning them is a chancy thing and often doesn't cure it, and I can't stand pulsing brakes.
Any idea if the Saab tool that consisted of a set of hone stones to mount instead of a set of pads, to smooth out minor roughness, is available, and at what price?
Rob, I would just in your case mount brand new pads, with the anti-squeal backing plates mounted to them.
However, the rotors may have serious rust on their surfaces - - black rust scale. Pads slip on this and it grows and spreads over the rotor surface despite brake use. If you see that, growing in from outer edge or out from inner hub onto what should be iron surface, and it's more than maybe 1/4" of the swept area, it's time for new rotors. This is typically a rust belt problem, not Arizona and similar areas.
