After the weather turned nice for a few days I thought I would revisit the quirky shifter. I pulled it out, measured the pin against a 22 mm wrench -- way too short. A few turns and it had uncrewed completely. So I tried to screw the pin back in; it wouldn't. Oops. Pulled the shift knob off and pushed the thin rod back down the shaft; held it there with a screw driver and was able to screw the pin back on and adjust the mm against the wrench. Put it back together (minus a few sentences and four letter words about aligning the cotter pin. And...it's fixed. I can shift into 5th without going far to the right. Duh. I was skeptical and didn't think the shifter would be so maladjusted. I thought it would be the plastic piece under the shifter housing and a worn piece on it -- but my turbo doesn't even have that plastic piece and it shifts fine. Odd.
I have a Beneley. Like many, I find this board is very helpful. Thanks all.
Now on to solving other problems...
