If the 1988 gearbox is a model GM45710, then you would have a taller box = if it is a GM45610 or GM45606, then you wouldn't want to put that gearbox in your CE unless you want a very low gearing.
The trouble is that many of these cars had a gearbox swapped in at some point in their life, so the year/model of the car can be misleading. Even the GMXXXXX part number can be misleading as we've uncovered gearboxes with primary cases that had been swapped in, but the gears didn't match what the ID plate had indicated.
In other words, don't trust what the model/year or the primary cover plate shows, but count the teeth on each primary gear, and also the ring/pinion assembly -- only then will you know exactly what breed of ratio gearbox you really have.....
