the lowest paid workforces often require the most supervision, and there is a correlation between the workforce cost and origin... especially if a part is manufactured halfway around the world from where it is designed, so the best supervision might only go there occasionally... or if the product is a knockoff that may *look* like the designed part without the tolerancing being correct... so some parts from that manufacturer may work fine and others might fail depending on where they fall in the distribution (and then we'd get reports here of part X lasting 4 years for user A and breaking in 2 months for user B)... that would be perfectly normal (pun intended)... or they may all suck, being a particularly bad knockoff using an inadequately spec'ed material (eg lower grade steel)... you'd need a lot of user feedback data to obtain some actually useful statistics I would think (and may vary part to part)...
so many things can go wrong when proper engineering processes are bypassed!
I would be more trusting of Chinese technology manufacture than mechanical autopart manufacture (though there are *tons* of knockoff semiconductors and other electronics components also)... comparing an ipod's quality to a motor mount is of dubious merit...
